Things To Keep In Mind Before You Play A Poker Tournament

Pay attention to the rest of the table.

Most players–even experienced ones–forget this one from time to time, yet it is probably the most important thing to keep in mind when playing tournament poker. You can get a lot of valuable information from observing what goes on around the table, including the other players. Observing what goes on is not enough however–you will also need to learn how to use the information that you gain to your advantage. Learning how a particular player responds to a given situation, for example, can spell the difference between winning and losing the large pot.

Learn when it is advantageous for you to fold.

As much as we would all hate to fold a good hand, in many cases there are actually valuable lessons to be learned from doing so. You can, for example, learn how an opponent played that particular hand and you can then use that knowledge to your advantage later on in the game.

Be aggressive…within reason.

In most cases, it would be far more beneficial for you to play poker aggressively rather than passively. You will want to take control of the hand as much as possible for one thing, and for another, it will have the effect of intimidating the other players, which can give you quite an advantage in certain scenarios. We are not saying that you should be obnoxious by any means–although that approach has worked out quite well for more than a few players! The point is however that you should always be in control of your game to the best of your abilities.

Exercise patience and discipline.

It can be a bit hard to resist the temptation to sit out a few rounds or even more, but you simply have to accept the fact that there are going to be times where it doesn’t make sense to play your hand, and you have to wait for long periods of time. In situations such as these, it is important for you to maintain your focus and composure, and keep an eye on the action around the table as closely as if you were in the thick of the game. Think of a poker tournament as a marathon of sorts. It will take a lot of playing to win and you will need to pace yourself if you want to go the distance.

Consistency is key.

This applies to aspects of your game such as the way you look at your cards and the way that you bet. Of course you will want to avoid predictable behavior that gives your opponents a clue as to what you are thinking but in all other aspects of the game, it would be beneficial to maintain consistency.

Most importantly: have fun!

Often times in the heat of battle, we forget the primary reason for wanting to play poker in the first place. Sure the possibility of winning that huge pot is foremost on every poker player’s mind–anyone who says otherwise is simply full of it! However, fun is the reason why we keep on playing in the face of numerous defeats and seemingly insurmountable odds, so keeping that in mind will make for a far more rewarding experience, regardless of the outcome of the game.
