No Limit Texas Hold ‘em Guide
Texas Holdem is undoubtedly the most popular form of poker played today. No Limit Holdem is most often played in tournaments both online and off and is a firm favorite among intermediate and advanced players.
The Objective
The object of this game is to create the best poker hand possible using at least one out of the two hole cards dealt, and no more than four community cards in the game.
Betting Structures
No Limit Texas Holdem involves bets that are known as the big blind and the small blind. The small bet is worth half the minimum bet, while the big blind is worth the minimum bet amount.
No Limit Texas Holdem Game Rules
- 1. To determine who will be dealer, each player around the table is dealt a card face up. The player with the highest card gets the dealer button. Cards are dealt to the dealer’s left side, around the table in a clockwise position.
- 2. Two cards are dealt face down to each player.
- 3. The player to the left of the dealer posts the small blind.
- 4. If players wish to call the blinds, they need to post an original bet called the big blind.
- 5. The flop round: If all players call the blinds (without them being raised), the dealer deals the ‘flop’ – three community cards face up are dealt to the table. Players may raise the blind if it is their turn to bet and other players around the table need to at least call that raise in order to stay in the game. These bets need to take place before the flop is dealt.
- 6. Players evaluate the strength of their hands by checking their first two cards together with the community cards.
- 7. A betting round begins. Players may essentially bet anything between the amount of the big blind and the number of chips that they have at the table. Another option for the player is to check – ie. to skip the bet and move on to the next player.
- 8. The turn card: The fourth community card is dealt to the table and turned over.
- 9. Another round of betting begins with any players still in the game betting and raising in turn.
- 10. The river card: When the round of betting ends, the fifth community card, known as the river card is turned over.
- 11. A final round of betting begins.
- 12. Presuming that the bet is called, or if everyone left in the hand checks, all the remaining players left in the game turn their cards over.
- 13. The player with the best five-card hand, made out of the combined seven cards that were dealt throughout the game, wins.
- 14. If two or more players have the same best hand at this stage of the game, the pot is split evenly between them.
- 15. Payouts in No Limit Texas Holdem are according to traditional poker rankings.
Tips and Strategies
- 1. Change your style of play based on your competition.
- 2. Vary your amounts when betting – this has proven to be more advantageous in the long run.
- 3. Going all-in is a common strategy to use in No Limit Texas Holdem. A rule of thumb is to assess how much of a hit you will take to see the Showdown and then compare that to the size of the pot.
Conclusion
No Limit Texas Holdem, with its aggressive style and fast action, is considered an exciting, challenging game that is wildly popular in the worlds of traditional and online gaming. Learning the game’s strategies and getting sufficient practice will improve the player’s chances of winning significantly.
