What I Need To Know Before Playing Poker.

Do you dream of one day being James Bond in “Casino Royale” and imagine yourself as the cynosure of all eyes as you walk into a casino? Or do you just want to try out a game of poker and see if you can make some money? Are you wondering about how to play this game, the intricacies and the details that go into making one a game player? If you are interested in poker, then this is what you need to know. The first thing that one needs to know about poker is how the game works and the rules of the game.

Some Basics of Poker

It is a game where each player is dealt two cards and once the cards are dealt, betting can begin. These cards are dealt face down and are known as “pocket cards”. The betting is done on the pocket cards and the game begins. After the betting is complete, the dealer lays out three more cards, known as community cards on the table. These are referred to as the “flop cards”. The hand that you have initially consists of the two pocket cards plus the three flop cards. Another round of betting happens after this.

The dealer then puts out a fourth card, known as “the turn” and later, a fifth card known as “the river” is placed down. The objective is to create the best possible combination of five cards from the cards that have been dealt with so far. These five cards should be from the three community cards and the two pocket cards.

A player can use both of his pocket cards or neither of them to create a hand. If the best hand is got from playing all the five community cards, it is known as “playing the board”. Now that you would have got a basic idea of the game, let us turn to the rules of poker.

Learning the Rules

The dealer is the one who deals the cards. If you are playing at an online casino, it is the person who has the dealer button assigned to him. Before any cards are dealt, you can do a “blind” and place a bet on the posted amount. The player who is sitting next to the dealer will post a small blind. And the next player posts a bigger blind than the previous one. This is equivalent to the minimum bet for the game.

After the blinds are posted, it is time for the cards to be dealt out. They are dealt clockwise from where the dealer sits. A play of betting follows. Players can bet, or fold which means that they drop out. The game now advances to the rest of the players and they have to fold, call or raise until the big blind is reached. If no one raises, the “big blind” better has to check his own wager.

The flop is then dealt with and another round of betting takes place. After all the bets are matched or players have folded their hands, the “turn” card is revealed. And after a further round of betting, the river card is revealed. After the hands are made, the player with the highest hand wins the game. As simple as that!
