A Beginner’s Guide To Playing Poker

While most of the rules that are outlined in this guide apply to virtually every poker variation, keep in mind that you can modify them according to your preferences in a casual home game setting.

At its most basic, Poker is a card game wherein players bet into a communal pot during every hand. The player that holds the best hand at the end of the round wins the pot.

During each round of betting, players have the option to choose from any one of four actions: they can either check, bet or raise, call, or fold. A check is simply a bet of zero that does not give up the player’s stake in the pot. A bet or raise is a nonzero bet that is larger than all bets that came before it, and one that all the following players must match or exceed, otherwise they give up all their claims to the pot. A call is a nonzero bet that is equal to a bet that came before. This maintains the player's claim to the pot. A fold in essence signifies the player’s surrender of the pot along with the loss of his or her cards and preceding bets.

Betting in poker usually moves along in a circle until each of the players has either called or folded. The number of betting rounds varies in different poker games, and sometimes each round is combined with the dealing out or replacement of cards.

Poker is typically played with a normal 4-suit 52-card deck, but in some variations of the game, the joker and other wild cards may be added. The ace is almost always played high, but in some cases it can be played low. Suits are not normally used in the breaking of ties, as are cards that are higher than the fifth. For purposes of comparison, only the best five cards in every hand are used. In the event of a tie, the communal pot is split among the winners equally.

When the joker is used in a game of poker, it can only be used as an ace or to complete a straight or flush in the majority of cases. The joker normally cannot be used as a wild card. It cannot, for example, be used as a king in order to make a hand of KK34X function as three kings. Also, when playing for low, the joker is automatically assigned the value of the lowest rank that is not already held. In the case of 753AX for example, the joker used counts as a deuce for a hand of 7532A.

While true wild cards are not normally used in a casino poker game, they are often used in more informal home games. Using wild cards in the game makes it possible to form an additional hand–five of a kind–which in most cases ranks higher than a straight flush. However, these hands can often cause confusion when two players have the same hand made up of different wild card combinations. In situations such as these, most players typically rank the hands that use fewer wild cards higher than those that use more wild cards.
